If there’s one design mistake I see over and over again, it’s rugs that are way too small. The right rug size can completely transform your space — it anchors your furniture, defines each zone, and instantly makes your home look more curated and intentional.

This is Part 3 of my 25 Interior Design Tips for 2025 series, and today we’re diving into one of the most overlooked (but game-changing) design details: rug sizing.

🏡 Why Rug Size Matters

Rugs do so much more than warm up your floors — they visually frame your furniture, connect all the elements in a room, and make everything feel balanced.A rug that’s too small will make your room feel disjointed and awkward, while a properly sized rug grounds the space and makes it look professionally designed.

Think of your rug as the “base layer” of your room. Everything else — your furniture, art, and accessories — builds off that foundation.

🛋️ Living Room Rug Rules

Your living room rug sets the tone for the entire space. Here’s what to keep in mind:

✅ Do:

  • Size up! If you’re between two rug sizes, always choose the larger one.

  • Place at least the front legs of all major furniture pieces (sofa, chairs, etc.) on the rug — this visually ties the layout together.

  • Center your coffee table on the rug and aim for about 8–12 inches of rug visible between the table and your seating.

  • Align the rug with your furniture layout, not the shape of the room — that symmetry is what makes it feel balanced.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Let your rug “float” in the middle of the room without touching any furniture.

  • Use a rug that’s smaller than your seating area — it’ll make the room feel cramped and disconnected.

  • Push your rug all the way to the wall — leave 8–12 inches of flooring showing for breathing room.

Designer tip: For sectionals, make sure the rug extends past the outer edges by at least a foot. This keeps the proportions balanced and intentional.

🛏️ Bedroom Rug Sizing 101

Bedroom rugs are all about comfort and proportion — you want your rug to feel generous and soft underfoot when you get out of bed.

For reference:

  • King bed: 9×12 is ideal.

  • Queen bed: 8×10 minimum.

✅ Do:

  • Place the rug horizontally under the bed, extending 18–24 inches beyond each side.

  • Make sure the rug starts just under your nightstands or slightly in front of them for a cohesive layout.

  • If you don’t have space for a full rug, use two matching runners on either side of the bed.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Use a tiny rug that only covers the foot of the bed — it looks like an afterthought.

  • Forget the layering trick! Layer a smaller decorative rug over a large jute base for a high-end look on a budget.

Designer tip: Orient your rug so most of it is visible at the foot of the bed — that’s where it makes the biggest visual impact.

🍽️ Dining Room Rug Tips

Dining rugs are all about function and proportion. You want chairs to stay on the rug — even when pulled out.

✅ Do:

  • Choose a rug that extends 24 inches past each side of the table.

  • Match the rug shape to your table: round for round, rectangular for rectangular.

  • Center the rug under both the table and the light fixture for perfect alignment.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Choose a rug that barely fits the table — chair legs hanging off the rug are a pet peeve for every designer.

  • Forget about material — washable, low-pile rugs are your best friend for dining spaces.

🏡 Hallways, Entryways & Kitchens

These spaces deserve love too! A well-sized runner or area rug adds warmth, color, and function.

Entryways:Choose a rug that fills most of the floor but leaves 4–6 inches of visible flooring around it. Ideally, it should cover at least two-thirds of your entry width.

Hallways:Leave a few inches of flooring visible on each side, and opt for a runner that nearly fills the length of the hallway — gaps at the ends make the space feel shorter.

Kitchens:A washable runner between counters or in front of the sink adds instant comfort and character. Stick with low-pile or performance fabrics for durability.

✨ Designer Secrets to Remember

  • Bigger is better. When in doubt, always size up. A larger affordable rug looks more designer than a small expensive one.

  • Rug = zone. Use rugs to define spaces in open-concept homes — they separate living, dining, and workspace areas effortlessly.

  • Layer textures. Mix jute with wool, or neutral bases with patterned overlays for a rich, curated feel.

  • Think scale. Taller ceilings or large open rooms need larger rugs to visually balance the space.

  • Measure before buying. Use painter’s tape to outline rug dimensions before you click “add to cart.”

🪞 Final Thoughts

Rugs are one of the easiest ways to elevate your home — but size truly matters. The right rug can make your room feel expensive, intentional, and perfectly pulled together.

If you take away one thing from this post: always go bigger than you think you need.
